Contingent Recruitment (Non Exclusive)
The recruiter is competing on the role with other agencies, or indeed the client if the client has advertised the role themselves already. The recruiter only gets paid should they successfully fill the role = contingency.
This in fairness is the main way businesses recruit, but it does have it’s pitfalls! If an agency has competition with other agencies it adds a time pressure as every agency wants to send their CV’s first, as they naturally do not want to risk losing the fee after doing the hard work of getting the job on in the first place. With senior roles I believe time is something essentially needed to ensure I understand the candidate as best as possible, thus making sure the right fit with every CV sent – rather than sending a CV in case your competitor sends it first – quality over quantity and all that!
For business critical senior hires I would always recommend working on a retained basis purely as it is a different type of role ie – hiring for an Accounts Assistant is vastly different from hiring for a Finance Director in terms of approach, level of information to be discussed etc. Hiring on a retained basis also includes other methods such as head hunting and utilising a network thoroughly and effectively.
The way this works is as a client you will pay a percentage of the fee upfront, a further percentage on receipt of the candidate short list and the remaining amount once the candidate starts.
You will enjoy 100% commitment and quality as the agency has zero threat and the process will be smooth and simple – you won’t have lots of different agencies calling to arrange interviews, then calling for feedback etc – painful!!
